5 TIPS FOR IELTS WRITING TASK 2

TIP 1: Paraphrase where possible.

[Viết lại theo cách của mình bất cứ khi nào có thể]

This comes in handy particularly at the very beginning of the task. You would have to PARAPHRASE the question, not COPY it wholesale. You can, among all else, either paraphrase by using synonyms, or changing the voice of the sentence.

Kĩ thuật này tỏ ra rất hữu dụng ở phần introduction. Ở phần này ta cần phải diễn đạt lại (paraphrase) đề bài sử dụng vốn từ mình có chứ không phải sao chép toàn bộ. Hai cách thường được sử dụng để paraphrase là sử dụng từ đồng nghĩa, và thay đổi thể của câu.

Example: In contemporary society, everyone should have equal opportunities in education...

=> It is commonly held that education ought to be made open to all.

(In this example, the given sentence was changed into passive voice - besides, “everyone should have equal opportunities” was replaced by “be made open to all”)

TIP 2: Be laser-focused on answering the question.

[Tập trung trả lời câu hỏi của đề bài]

After the first few sentences touching on the peripheral of the topic, you should be able to narrow your paper to addressing just the ASKED stuff. Failure to thoroughly answer the question would result in a deduction in points.

Tập trung trả lời đầy đủ câu hỏi trong đề. Sau khi viết một số câu dẫn vào topic, ta cần viết một câu thesis để trả lời chính xác những gì được hỏi để tránh mất điểm.

Example: Overpopulation of urban areas has led to numerous problems.

Identify one or two serious ones and suggest ways that governments and individuals can tackle these problems.

=> ...This essay attempts to analyze the two most severe issues arising from overpopulation in urban areas, and propose several measures for the authority and the public alike to solve these problems.

(There are two parts to be addressed in this essay: one asks us to identify some problems; the other requires solutions to these issues. There is no need to discuss other aspects of the issue.)

Có hai phần cần được giải quyết: một là xác định vấn đề; hai là đưa ra giải pháp. Chúng ta không cần phải bàn luận đến những khía cạnh khác của vấn đề.

TIP 3: Use Wh-questions (Who/What/Why/Where/How) to generate ideas.

[Sử dụng Wh-questions để tìm ý]

Example: Some people claim that it is immoral to exploit animals, and that the government should prohibit using animals for scientific research. In the meantime, others argue that exploiting animals is crucial for allowing scientists to learn more about human biology and health.

Who: vegetarians, animal rights theorists; anatomists, scientists

What: ethicality of animal cruelty, animal welfare, scientific advances

Why: animal rights, alternative methods of experimenting; life-saving cures, preclusion of using human subjects

Where: science labs

TIP 4: Write more complex sentences. Use relative clause, subordinate clause, conditional clause.

[Viết nhiều câu phức hơn bằng cách thêm vào câu mệnh đề quan hệ, mệnh đề phụ thuộc, mệnh đề điều kiện]

Example:

Relative clause: Research conducted on animals, which has been practiced since 500 BC, is recently condemned as unethical

Subordinate clause: Some believe it is immoral to conduct experiments on animals while others contend that it is for the very sake of humanity.

Conditional clause: If vaccines had not been tested on animals, millions of people would have died from currently treatable diseases.

TIP 5: Use language in a cautious away.

[Dùng ngôn ngữ một cách thận trọng]

One way for writers to make their essays for cautious is using hedges. They are expressions that reduce the certainty of the writer about the subject matter, which in turn negates assumptions. This is an important feature of academic writing. There are many ways in which a sentence can be hedged, among which are the use of modal verbs and adverbs.

Sử dụng những từ / cụm từ làm giảm sự chắc chắc của người viết (hedges), từ đó khiến cho lời văn trở nên thuyết phục hơn. Có nhiều cách để thực hiện kĩ thuật trên, bao gồm việc sử dụng động từ khiếm khuyết và trạng từ.

Example:

Modal verbs: animals might mislead scientists into neglecting potential cures.

Adverbs: there is virtually no adequate alternative to testing on animals
