Some people say that it is unnecessary to teach children about the skills of handwriting in this modern age. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
The issues of equipping young generations with helpful skills have never failed to attract public attention and provoke debates throughout our history. These days, it is often argued that the skills of handwriting are no longer of considerable necessity to children. From my experience, I just agree with this idea to some extent as although they are no longer truly important, children can still benefit from learning the skills of handwriting.
To commence with, it is reasonable that the skills of handwriting is not the crux in today’s technological age. Technological advances have seemingly put an end to several handwritten forms such as sticky notes, letters and introduced other computer-based methods such as email, online reminders, etc. Therefore, it would be impractical to force young children to practice handwriting when providing them with technological skills and showing them how to use the gadgets could be more effective. Not to mention, practicing handwriting would be so time-consuming that children will not have a sufficient amount of time to devote to other vital skills.
At the same time, I do believe that the acquisition of handwriting skills would tremendously facilitate the development of a child. From my own experience, handwritten papers express the sender’s emotions more effectively than the electric ones including emoji and icons on emails. Thus, teaching children how to show their emotions throughout their writing would make them greater communicators. Another benefit worth consideration is that practicing handwriting can shape children’s personality. Since it takes a great deal of time to master handwriting skills, students would develop greater perseverance and consistency.
All things considered, though handwriting skills are not as pivotal now as they used to be, children should not be totally deprived of them.
