Throughout history, opportunities for better understanding have strongly been emphasized by many people. Over the past few decades, oversea travelling has become increasingly affordable and accessible to travelers. Despite some obvious disadvantages of this trend, I would argue that these are outweighed by the advantages.
To commence with, there are two main problems caused by the rise of international tourism. As more and more people turn to travelling with reasonable prices, environmental problems triggered by transportation are inevitable. As a matter of fact, there has been significant degradation in air quality when an accelerating number of people opt for air travel. Not to mention, the escalation of tourism does endanger the life of local people. Such tourist hotspots as Paris, Berlin or Rome have been plagued by problems like theft, begging or drug abuse when they are thronged with holidaymakers during the tourist seasons.
These problems, however, truly pale into insignificance when compared to the benefits of this change. First and foremost, it holds true that the more opportunities people have to travel, the greater chance they have to broaden their connections and sharpen their knowledge. People can now genuinely experience the cultural charming beauties of places they merely know through books and movies. Travellers, consequently, stand a better chance of communicating with local people and gain a deeper insight into the world outside. Another benefit to be considered is that the development of tourism can give a boost to local traditions. Were it not for the accessibility of international travelling, the local customs would not be showcased and appreciated as properly as they now are. This is true for the example of ethnic minorities in the southern mountainous parts of Vietnam, whose cultures are now recognized worldwide for the country has welcomed more tourists from other nations.
In conclusion, it appears to me that the advantages of this tendency are more significant than its demerits. To my mind, resources should be allocated to develop the tourism industry to give people opportunities to enrich their knowledge and introduce their cultures to others.
